LiDAR Robot Navigation

LiDAR robot navigation is a complex combination of localization, mapping, and path planning. This article will introduce the concepts and show how they function using a simple example where the robot reaches the desired goal within the space of a row of plants.

LiDAR sensors are low-power devices which can extend the battery life of robots and reduce the amount of raw data required to run localization algorithms. This enables more iterations of the SLAM algorithm without overheating the GPU.

LiDAR Sensors

The heart of a lidar system is its sensor that emits laser light pulses into the environment. These pulses bounce off surrounding objects in different angles, based on their composition. The sensor determines how long it takes for each pulse to return, and uses that data to calculate distances. Sensors are placed on rotating platforms, which allows them to scan the area around them quickly and at high speeds (10000 samples per second).

LiDAR sensors can be classified according to whether they're intended for airborne application or terrestrial application. Airborne lidar systems are typically mounted on aircrafts, helicopters or UAVs. (UAVs). Terrestrial LiDAR systems are typically placed on a stationary robot platform.

To accurately measure distances the sensor must be able to determine the exact location of the robot. This information is usually captured using a combination of inertial measuring units (IMUs), GPS, and time-keeping electronics. LiDAR systems utilize sensors to calculate the precise location of the sensor in space and time, which is then used to create an 3D map of the surrounding area.

LiDAR scanners can also detect different types of surfaces, which is particularly useful when mapping environments that have dense vegetation. When a pulse crosses a forest canopy it will usually register multiple returns. Usually, the first return is associated with the top of the trees, and the last one is associated with the ground surface. If the sensor captures each peak of these pulses as distinct, this is called discrete return LiDAR.

Distinte return scans can be used to determine surface structure. For instance forests can result in a series of 1st and 2nd return pulses, with the last one representing the ground. The ability to separate and store these returns as a point cloud allows for detailed terrain models.


Once an 3D model of the environment is built and the robot is equipped to navigate. This process involves localization and creating a path to get to a navigation "goal." It also involves dynamic obstacle detection. The latter is the method of identifying new obstacles that aren't present in the original map, and then updating the plan accordingly.

SLAM Algorithms

SLAM (simultaneous mapping and localization) is an algorithm which allows your robot to map its surroundings and then identify its location in relation to the map. Engineers utilize the information to perform a variety of purposes, including the planning of routes and obstacle detection.

To allow SLAM to work, your robot must have sensors (e.g. laser or camera), and a computer running the right software to process the data. You also need an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to provide basic information on your location. The result is a system that can accurately track the location of your robot in an unspecified environment.

The SLAM system is complex and there are a variety of back-end options. Whatever option you choose for an effective SLAM is that it requires a constant interaction between the range measurement device and the software that collects data and the vehicle or robot. It is a dynamic process with almost infinite variability.

As the robot moves and around, it adds new scans to its map. The SLAM algorithm then compares these scans with previous ones using a process called scan matching. This allows loop closures to be established. The SLAM algorithm adjusts its robot's estimated trajectory when loop closures are detected.

The fact that the environment can change in time is another issue that complicates SLAM. If, for instance, your robot is navigating an aisle that is empty at one point, but it comes across a stack of pallets at another point, it may have difficulty finding the two points on its map. Mapping
