An Adventure Back In Time: What People Discussed About Replacement Door Handles 20 Years Ago
How to Replace Door Handles
Door handles are a key element of your home's decor. A new handle can transform your space and bring your decor up to date.
Over time the knobs on your door may become stiff, or even break. These are indications that it's time to replace them. This guide will help you choose the appropriate replacement door handle for your home.
Door Knobs
The handles on your doors can enhance the look of your home and allow you to shut and open them. They are available in a wide range of finishes, colors, and types to match your decor. If yours have started to show signs of wear or require an upgrade, you can change them in just a few simple steps.
You'll need to find the spindle, or shaft, through which the knob is connected to the door. Some have a small hole that you can insert a narrow screwdriver into to loosen the set screws that hold the handle in place. Some have a tiny slot or hole that you can press the spring-activated detent pin using flathead. When you press this pin, the latch mechanism releases and allows you to pull or push the knob.
Once you have the spindle or shaft in your hand take the knob off and replace it. Make sure you align it correctly and verify that the latch is working correctly before tightening the new set screws.
After replacing the knob, place the rod for latching over the door's hole and then lock it using the rod mechanism on the second knob. Ensure that the holes are aligned, then tighten the screws for the latch plate.
Some people opt for the smooth or brushed finish on their door hardware for an elegant, modern look that complements other furniture in their homes. Some prefer a rustic design that goes well with farmhouse-styled rooms. If you have a member of your family with mobility issues, you might prefer the lever or rim lock that require less pressure to operate.
Other factors are being considered more and more for the design of door handles. Accessibility and control of infections are the main issues that have led to the creation of new designs for handle handles, such as ones that can be operated with a person's forearm.
Latch
upvc door handles that holds the handle of your door open will wear down over time. It is simple to change the latch on your door handle. This will make an enormous difference in the way it opens and closes.
Depending on the type of knob you are using, the latch may be part of the knob itself, or it could be an individual piece that is attached to the door. In either case, the same process for removing and installing will be used. The process of removing the old latch of the way is relatively simple especially if the door handle has what is known as a "magic button". This little pressure-slot, located on the side knob is what you will have to press to pop the latch out of the handle.
If your handle isn't equipped with this magic button the first step is to take off any cover plates that are positioned over the latch plate. They are typically rectangular or circular and can be removed using the aid of a screwdriver. Some have a slot in which you can put your screwdriver, whereas others simply snap off.
The next step is to unscrew the two machine screws that secure the latch and the inner plate to the door handle. These are the screws that are shorter with a pointy tip and you'll need to keep these in a safe place to reuse them in subsequent steps. Once the screws are removed, you are able to remove the latch plate as well as the mechanism from the hole and set it aside.
You can now begin working on the new latch. Insert the latch plate into the door hole and secure it with the hardware supplied. Make sure that the square pin in the interior of the latch faces the latching mechanism in the handle and aligns with the other screw holes in the handle. Then push the exterior latch plate onto the handle and secure it with the screws supplied.
Strike Plate
One of the most common reasons to replace a door handle is because it is loose or doesn't lock properly. This is usually due to malfunctioning parts of the latching mechanism, such as a strike plate that is too small or has moved up or down on the doorjamb as time passes. This easy project allows you to replace your old strike plate with a longer, new one that will provide better security and ensure that your door stays shut.
To determine if the issue is due to the strike plate, apply some lipstick or a similar marking material to the latch bolt. Close the door, and then try to latch it. If the mark is below the strike plate hole, this means that your door isn't latching because the plate is too short. If the mark is above or below the strikeplate hole the strikeplate may have been moved up or downward on the doorjamb.
It is possible to screw the new strikeplate into the one you have already installed using the screws included with it, depending on the door. It is possible that you will need to drill holes first, and then chisel the wood to ensure a secure fit. If this is the case, be careful not to cut too hard or you'll damage the integrity of your doorjamb.
Installing a brand new box-style strike plate will give the lock a more secure hold on the doors and require more force to open them. Typically, it requires two longer screws to secure the strike plate to the frame of the door. To do this, you'll have to remove the current strike plate, then drill and chisel the wood to make room for the new one.
This rare strike plate is made of solid brass and comes with a thick, heavy-duty. It's made to be used on antique rim locks. This kit includes both wood screws and machine screws so you can pick the right hardware to suit your requirements. Be aware that wood screws have a pointed tip, and machine screws have a blunter tip.
