Technology

The agency would like to know the amount of risk the industry perceives with fully automated operation, and if the industry is contemplating any additional safeguards to reduce the risk.

Innovation

Rail companies are adopting new technologies to enhance worker safety, boost efficiency in business processes, and ensure that the freight they transport reaches its destination in good condition. Examples of such innovations range from the use of cameras and sensors to monitor freight, to new railcar designs that keep hazardous cargo secure during transit. Some of these technologies even offer railroads the ability to send emergency response personnel to the scene of an accident so they can quickly mitigate the damage and minimize risk to property and lives.

One of the most renowned innovations in rail is Positive Train Control (PTC), which will inhibit train-to-train collisions, situations where trains are on tracks where they shouldn't be, as well as other accidents resulting from human errors. It is a three-part system comprised of onboard locomotive systems that track the train, wayside networks that communicate with the locomotive and a massive backend server that analyzes and collects data.
