What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes
When a transponder is questioned it sends out an encoded signal that is accompanied by a four-digit code. The signal is referred to as an SQUAWK code and forms the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to transmit specific messages to air traffic control in the case of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly used to communicate with ATC in situations where pilots are unable to speak on the radio, and are essential to ensure safe flying.
Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar queries with an identifier code. This enables ATC to identify an aircraft that is surrounded by screens. Transponders come in a variety of modes that vary how they respond to interrogation. Mode A only transmits the code, whereas mode C also contains altitude information. Mode S transponders send more detailed information such as callsigns and positions. This is useful when flying in airspace with a lot of people.
A common sight is a small, beige box beneath a pilot's seat in the majority of aircraft. This is the transponder and it is designed to transmit a SQUAWK code when the aircraft is activated by air traffic control. The transponder can be set to the 'ON,' ALT or SBY (standby position) positions.

There are 63 distinct code blocks that can be assigned to an aircraft. However, there are also reserved codes which prevent the use of specific codes in areas with high traffic or during emergencies. The discrete code blocks are configured by statistical analysis to reduce the chances that two aircraft with the same SQUAWK codes will be in the same area at any given time.

VIN Numbers
VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on the planet with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). The tenth and eleventh numbers indicate the year of the vehicle's manufacture. The eleventh digit indicates which assembly plant manufactured the vehicle. The tenth to seventeenth digits may also contain additional information such as features or options included in the car.
The VIN code is a serial code with six digits that identify a car or truck. The last digit is also the check digit, and the other numbers are transliterated into numbers. For example the first digit is given a value of eight; the next digits increase by one until it reaches nine at the seventh digit, and then becomes two. Then, the whole VIN is converted back to its original form by multiplying each digit's weight by 11. If the result is same as the check number then the VIN will be valid.
