Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary
Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique key case to celebrate the brand's centenary. Made of Dark Stained Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying "B" paperweight, a set keys and a brochure that features never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.
It is the perfect gift to greet a new owner of their luxurious vehicle.
Aesthetics
Bentley is a brand that takes its aesthetics very seriously. It is evident in the precise positioning of its quilting, the selection of leather from cattle by-products, the wood that comes from sustainably managed forests and the creative patterns on its levers. When you drive by a car like the Continental GT W12, its exquisite design is revealed through carefully curated lighting.
The Continental GT is Bentley's most sophisticated open-top vehicle. Its rear tonneau, as an instance, featured the largest piece of dark-stained, book-matched Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to the production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.
It is this unique design, attention to detail and craftsmanship to detail that has established Bentley as the most sought-after automobile brand. The company continues to push the limits by utilizing the most advanced technology and workmanship, such as the introduction of the digital instrument cluster and an electric tilt-opening rear glass sunroof, a handcrafted docking station for Apple iPads, and electrochromic 'smart' glass that can be switched from transparent to opaque by pressing one button.
Bentley celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, 100 years after the marque was founded. The marque, now owned by Volkswagen independently following years of dispute with BMW and Volkswagen, had planned a variety of special events and launches to commemorate this historic occasion. Prior to pandemic planning taking center stage, the marque held a series of special events and launches planned to celebrate this significant occasion.
Design
Bentley is known as a luxury car manufacturer that makes ostentatious and luxurious cars. But even keys stand out. The Bentayga key is crafted from sterling silver. It features a large 'B' logo that lets everyone know you're driving a Bentley. The key is also embossed with the dates 1919 and 2019 to commemorate the company's centennial.
Bentley Mulliner has redesigned and created the Mulsanne to become the ultimate Grand Touring vehicle. It has two opposing pairs of rear seats that were inspired by luxury private aviation that provide passengers with unbeatable comfort and privacy. The custom heating and ventilation as well as air conditioning system was developed to give each passenger the ideal temperature control.
The Mulsanne has a twin turbocharged 6.75 litre W12 engine that puts out 560bhp, and 479lb-ft of torque. This colossal power is complemented by a new suspension architecture that delivers Bentley's signature hushed ride.
Bentley has launched a new specification for cars made after 2019 to celebrate its centennial. This is known as the Centenary Specification. The cabin has cross-stitching, and contrast stitching in Centenary Gold throughout. The Bentley Wings on the headrests and seats are stitched in Centenary Gold, adding to the feeling of celebration. A bespoke Bentley key case is included in the Centenary Specification, making the Bentley experience all-inclusive.
Function
The Bentley Mulsanne key comes with an opening button for the trunk, and another button which starts the car. It also has a button to activate the parking break. There is a knob that can fold and unfold the mirrors when parking in tight spaces. This feature makes it easier to get in and out of your vehicle.
The key is made from vegetable tanned leather. It takes over two days to craft each one. The key is cut by hand, shaped by hand, stitched, sealed, and then polished to produce a premium result. It is small and sturdy, and it fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design resembles the Volkswagen Phaeton's large car key, but it feels heavier and more luxurious.
Secure-A-Key is also included to help prevent keyless entry theft. The device is placed inside the remote control key fob and disables it after a few minutes of inactivity, which prevents thieves from transmitting the frequency of the key to other devices which can unlock and start the vehicle.
Bentley's unique design reflects the company's values of fine craftsmanship and engineering expertise as well as cutting-edge technology. Over 4,000 employees are employed at the Crewe headquarters, where they are responsible for the design, development and production of Bentley automobiles. These workers apply the skills that have been passed through generations to current automotive technology. This is a characteristic of British manufacturing at its finest.

Bentley estimates that it takes around 500 man-hours in order to create and assemble the average Mulsanne. The unwillingness to embrace modern technology is the main factor to this lengthy and laborious process. The Crewe factory workers don't use a machine to space perfectly-matched leather seats. Instead they do it by hand. Drivers must park their vehicles manually, instead of using sensors built into the vehicle to direct them to perpendicular and parallel spots.
Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization capabilities in a special Mulsanne W.O. Edition, that pays homage to the William Osler, the founder of Bentley. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition pays homage to the founding father of the brand, William Osler Bentley. The limited-edition cars come with an exclusive key that shows a slice of the 1930 8 Liter's crankshaft.
