10 Inspirational Graphics About Saab Ignition Key Replacement
Saab Key Programming

Saab cars made since 1994 have an immobilizer feature made up of coded keys. In order to add a second key, it requires a new transponder and special programming. This is usually handled by the dealer using a Tech2 diagnostic tool.

The issue is that this can be very costly. Always keep an extra set of keys in your possession.

Transponder key

The transponder is a piece of key that has an electronic chip. The chip sends a signal when the key is put in the ignition. The car checks to see whether the signal matches the one on the key. If the signals match the car will then open and start. This is a great way to guard your car against theft.

Transponder keys could be an increasingly popular feature for cars, but they are not as secure as traditional keys made of metal. While the metal portion of a traditional key may be cut and copied the transponder is protected by an electronic chip. The chip contains a unique code that is programmed into a car's computers in order to identify it.

The car will recognize the Saab keyfob, and allow it to turn on. The car will only recognize the key fob if it is equipped with a chip that is unmodified and programmed to match. If not, the car will reject the key and refuse to start.

It's important to make sure that you have an extra key for your Saab. This is particularly true for those who live in a rural area with numerous car thieves. The good news is that you can obtain a replacement key for your Saab without having to go to a dealer and pay the high prices they ask. You can have a replacement key created on the spot for less than half of the price you'd pay at dealerships.

Wired key

Saab cars typically come with two keys when new. If you only have one, it is recommended to purchase an extra key fob as soon as is possible, because if you lose it, your car will require a new CIM unit, and the locking cylinders will need to be replaced. This could be expensive, especially if you are purchasing a used vehicle.

The next step is to connect the wires for the column and row to the microcontroller. This is the toughest component of the project and it will require lots of soldering. There is no standard method to do this, but it is crucial to plan how you will route and solder the rows and columns. For this keyboard, there are five rows and 17 columns, which means there will be 22 microcontroller wires and pins that you need to connect.

After the rows and column are soldered together It is now time to connect the key switches. Solder a diode to each key switch pin. This will shield the pins from current, thus preventing them from being cut off. A diode allows current to flow in one direction, and it also has a the black band as a visual indicator that indicates the direction in which current will flow.

Sanabria says that some of the tools offered in auto parts stores, like the Autel MaxiIM IM608PRO or IM508 will assist customers shopping or DIY customers to program replacement keys and restore the immobilizer's data. The tools plug into the OBD port and automatically guide the customer through the procedure, making it simpler than replacing the computer in the vehicle.

The Key Lab -starting the battery

A lot of people keep an item in their trunk to jump start a vehicle in an emergency, but this might not be the best option for vehicles with newer technology. These vehicles are equipped with numerous digital and computer systems that communicate with one another. A voltage spike when batteries are connected to another could cause damage to the components and render your vehicle unusable.

Start the working vehicle and allow it to run for around two minutes before connecting the cables to the one that is disabled. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal on the good battery (it will have "POS" or "+" on it). Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted, clean metal surface beneath the damaged vehicle's hood. An engine block is an ideal choice. Don't connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the dead battery, since it could spark an ignition that ignites the gasoline in the engine bay.

After the cables have been connected, you can start the vehicle and let it run for about five minutes. Then disconnect the cables in reverse. Be aware that the battery of the Saab 9-3 will be charged when you drive, so it will take a while for the battery to come back to its original level. It is a good idea to invest in a spare key fob as soon as you can, since replacing the one that works requires the installation of a new computer module and a special program to convince it that your missing keys aren't attempting to steal the car.

Replacement Case

Many Saab owners have only one key for their car and if they lose that they'll be charged. It's costly to add a key and requires replacing the CIM or TWICE for older models. It is best to have a backup key in case of theft or other disaster and the best option is to purchase an extra key as soon as you are able to. But don't buy a used key, even when it's "new." Keys that are claimed to be new from a second-hand store will not perform and are almost certain to fail at the critical moment.

The dealer will charge you top dollar if you only have one working key. We can, however, reset and re-program your computer's EEPROM to prepare it to accept an alternative key without replacing the entire system. This could save you a significant amount of money. It's also much less expensive than waiting until you lose your only key.
