FlexZone

The Samsung FlexZone side by side fridge freezer is unique in its 3-zone system that allows you to add an extra freezer drawer or refrigerator compartment. This flexibility lets you personalize your fridge freezer according to your storage requirements and needs. SmartThings

SmartThings isn't quite the platform that Alexa and Google Assistant are however it does offer a lot of smart devices that you can add. It's also built into Samsung smartphones TVs, tablets and tablets - as well as some fridges. It might be enough for some people particularly if they own several Samsung products.

The SmartThings app is a bit elegant and well-rounded, with a 'if x then y' automation feature that works surprisingly well. You can set up things such as an alarm that goes off when water sensors detect a flooding or turn on the light when your phone senses that you're at home. It can control your fridge by connecting it to a smart socket however we've had mixed results with this.

You'll require a hub to use SmartThings, and it's not inexpensive. Samsung offers a range of options which include the SmartThings Station that you can connect to an existing router and use it as a nightlight. There's also a less expensive SmartThings hub dongle, which supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you've got your smart fridge with a hub, smartphone and smart fridge it's a breeze to use. SmartThings lets you manage your refrigerator from anywhere. It's also compatible with Matter, an open protocol that allows devices to be paired regardless of brand. For most users, however, merged Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls is most likely the best option.

Family Hub

This refrigerator freezer is the most modern one you can find. It comes with a 21-inch touchscreen integrated into the door and a number of clever features. You can access entertainment apps, make notes for family members (think a huge digital version of a notebook that's stuck to the fridge), check weather updates, and much more, thanks to Samsung's own voice activation assistant, Bixby.

The touchscreen also allows you to organize your food and recipes, with the ability to add ingredients directly from a recipe app and see what's in your fridge through internal cameras. You can make a grocery list on the move and track foods to see their expiration date. You can use an app for recipe reading to read the recipe while you cook.

This is the second generation of Family Hub fridges and Samsung says it's spent a year perfecting them based on customer feedback. One major change is that you can now create different profiles for each member of your household so they can customize the apps and information they have access to. It's not quite as good as having Alexa integration built into your refrigerator but it's an improvement over last year's model.

Family Hub is not only an application for managing groceries and entertainment, but it also controls Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be integrated into Matter-compatible devices, like lights and plugs, and you can use the touchscreen to control them as well.

Samsung's fridge has been in use for a few years now and, while it still provides a decent amount of functionality, the touchscreen smarts aren't exactly a must-have feature for most people. These are more of a fun and somewhat frivolous addition than anything else.

This could change with the release of more software updates, but for now these models are ideal for those who want to have the most comprehensive connected refrigerator possible. If you're not among those, you could opt for a less expensive model that doesn't have the Family Hub to save some cash. If you own a variety of smart home appliances that you want to control from one screen, or if you are awed by the idea of a refrigerator with a huge touchscreen, it could be worth the cost.
