Twilight Princess Game Review
The darkest and most serious of the Nintendo 3D Zelda games, Twilight Princess pushes the limits of graphics to the limit on the Wii's hardware. It's darker and more disturbing than The Wind Waker. There are no bug-eyed pigs or effeminate Pirates.
Link is dragged into a dimension that is called Twilight Realm, where he assumes the form of an Hylian and a wolf, while being guided by Midna.
Gameplay
The thirteenth and final installment of The Legend of Zelda is Twilight Princess. It was released in 2006 for the Nintendo GameCube system and Wii. The game was highly acclaimed by critics, and received perfect scores from several publications including 1UP, CVG, EGM and GamesRadar. It is regarded by many as one of the best in the entire series, and it was the highest-selling Zelda game on the PAL market.
Twilight Princess has a stylized, naturalistic graphics style similar to Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time, but with a more sophisticated graphics engine. It's the first game in the series to have a fully directional movement control system, instead of a fixed view like the previous games. This modification was made to accommodate the Wii console, which features a pointing-based user interface. The GameCube version of the game features a section at the back that contains mirror-image maps for players who prefer the fixed view.
When entering the Twilight Realm, Link is transformed into a wolf and comes across Midna, the mysterious creature. She informs Link that the kingdom of Hyrule is now under the control of a group shadow beasts, led by the evil sorcerer Zant. She further explains that she is the real ruler of Twili, but was usurped and cursed to her present form by Zant.
A short cutscene shows soldiers being killed by shadow creatures when Link and Midna arrive at Hyrule Castle. Link and Midna then escape the castle via an entrance tunnel to enter the Twilight Realm.
In the Twilight Realm, Link can make use of his wolf form to move around more freely around the world. Link can also use his senses to navigate the world. For instance, he can detect the spirits of deceased soldiers and other animals that are in the distance. He can also whistle and pick grass from specific patches to summon an animal, such as the Hawk, Epona or other. Link can also howl near the patches to summon a similar animal.
Twilight Princess is no different from other Zelda titles in the sense that music plays an important role. Link can play a musical instrument, such as the flute or harp, to draw and summon various animals. Link can also command the form of a wolf by speaking. He can also use his compass as a guide to help him navigate through the world.
Characters
The Legend of Zelda series is filled with colorful characters that leave a lasting impression on players. From hands emerging from toilets to pirate sailors sailing across vast oceans, these quirky and creative personalities are the essence of the game. Twilight Princess continues the tradition of previous games by introducing a wide range of memorable characters.
In the course of the story, Link meets new NPCs that are not only interesting, but also believable. It's a major step in the right direction to have many of these NPCs actually play a part in the story, rather than just being a victim. NPCs such as Rusl who explains why the forest is becoming more dangerous and kidnaps children, or the Ordon villagers who appear as wolves when the kids are kidnapped They all have distinct personalities that feel genuine.
Other notable characters include Iza, who operates the Boat Rental Cabin and Iza's Rapid Ride in the Lanayru Province, Louise, the cat of Telma who helps Wolf Link locate a secret passageway through her bar as well as sewer system to the castle and Faron, whose spirit guides Link and Midna to the Forest Temple in the Eldin Province. The duo defeats the Fused Shadow possessed by Diababa and gains the first Tear of Light.
Midna is the princess of the Twilight Realm and one of the most intriguing characters in the game. She is able to switch between her wolf and human forms and possesses a piece of the Triforce of Wisdom. She tells Link about her experience at the twilight, and how she defeated Zant the King of Twilight.
Zant who holds the other half of the Triforce of Wisdom, is a wicked sorcerer and ruler of the Twilight Realm. He was removed to the Twilight Realm by the goddesses for encroaching on their land and enslaving the people. Midna can dispel Zant's power allowing him to change into his human form whenever required.
The game also has an improved horse called Epona that can be ridden in Hylian and wolf versions. Link can whistle at specific patches of grass to call the animal. (similar to Majora’s Mask). Twilight Princess is the first game in the series where the player can identify their horse.
Theme
Music is an integral part of any Zelda title. It can make a game feel massive as well as expansive and thrilling. However, Twilight Princess is criticized for having an inconsistent and inconsistent soundtrack that fails to convey the emotional impact of certain scenes. Ocarina of Time Majora's Mask and other games have stunning compositions that explode at the right moment to create a feeling of majestic and eerie.
Twilight Princess was composed by Asuka Ohta and Toru Minegishi. Koji Kondo, the composer of the series for the first since Wind Waker was responsible for overseeing the composers. Link's home-town song, "Faron Woods," is a more uplifting and joyful track. The tune makes use of various soft sounds and stringed instruments that create an idyllic sense of peace and safety for the player. Story
Link's mission in Twilight Princess is to save Hyrule from the corrupted parallel world known as the Twilight Realm. To accomplish this, he takes the form of both a Hylian and a Wolf, as well as being helped by a woman named Midna.
Midna was the original ruler of Twili but she was overthrown and cursed by Zant to transform into her imp form. The Sages of the Old Testament explain to Link and Midna that only defeating Ganondorf will free them from their curse. The Sages reveal that the Mirror of Twilight is the source of the darkness in the Twilight Realm. Midna and Link travel to the Spirit's Spring, where they encounter hostile monsters that kidnap children. Wolf Link's keen sense of smell assists them in tracking the children's scent to a nearby bridge and then cross into the Twilight Realm.
They enter the Forest Temple and battle Diababa and win the first Fused Shadow. After this, Faron informs them that the next stop is the Eldin Province to the west (Wii) or east (GCN).
Midna at the Lakebed Temple of Lanayru teleports Link to a fiery stone and uses her powers on the ice beneath Lake Hylia. Rutela's spirit, who was the recently dead Zora queen, appears to Link and informs him that he needs to visit the Lakebed Temple if he wants to unlock the treasure of the Zora.
Returning from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask The horse Epona is able to be ridden in Twilight Princess. Unlike the set name used in the two previously mentioned games, Link can now decide the horse's name himself.
Midna and Link are able to recover the remaining Mirror Shards once they arrive in the Twilight Realm. The Sages reveal to Midna that she is the real ruler of the Twili. She was passed by the monarchy and had turned to an ego-driven god. The Sages tell them that they will only defeat Ganondorf by bringing Ganondorf to the light and break the pact between the Twilight kingdom and Hyrule kingdom.
