Double-glazed windows are a popular feature. They can wear down over time and get rusty or worn out.

To replace a UPVC window handle, you will need to know the spindle length of your existing handle and also its fixings. This can be done by examining the base of the previous handle.

Handle

Over time uPVC window locks and handles are susceptible to damage due to wear and tear or by accidental or deliberate damage. This could result in the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close, or it's not even locked in any way. It may be tempting to replace the entire window unit if this happens, but it is not always necessary. Most of the time, it's the case that a replacement handle or lock is sufficient.

The espagnolette style is the most common uPVC window handle. This handle has a spindle that protrudes out of the handle. It fits into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism inside the window. It is essential to match the appropriate handle and lock to your windows to ensure that they function properly, which is why we stock a wide selection of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.

When replacing a uPVC window handle it is a good idea to use screw cover caps in order to keep the screws secure and shield them from corrosion. Alternatively, it's possible to make use of a spacer or washer to ensure a better seal. A screw cap will prevent debris and water from entering the handle, which can cause damage.

After the handle has been removed from the window, it's recommended to wash the spindle of the new handle, as well as the threaded portion of the bolt. This will make sure that the new handle is fitted and functions properly, and it can also help stop dirt from getting into the multipoint lock.

The next step is to put in the uPVC handle. It's important that you follow the directions provided by the handle you have purchased, and to take a look at the old one prior to starting in order to have an idea of how to proceed. Usually, the process is quite simple. If you run into any issues not addressed in this guide, we suggest reaching out to our team for more information.

You should also note that if you're replacing an uPVC Cockspur (also called Espag handle), you will need the step height of your window to determine the right size handle. The step height is the distance between the bottom of the window and the location where the cockspur handles sits.

Hinges

The hinges might not be aligned with the window frame If your windows begin to open and shut with a visible gap. It is usually a simple fix that can be solved with a set of replacement hinges. We have a variety of options and can even modify the size of the window hinges to meet your requirements.

We can supply different types of hinges for Upvc and timber windows. These are available in a choice of colors to match the frames of your existing windows and come with all fixings to install. We can supply repair screw packs for double-glazed windows that have hinges that are older in style. This allows you to cut the thread back into the frame.

We offer a wide variety of hinge types. They include traditional casement hinges, that can be used with a tilt and turn handle or a normal handle as well as the fire escape egress sash hinges that are made for larger side hung windows. These are designed to open completely in the event of an emergency and have an easy-clean position for ease of cleaning. We also carry hinges with restricted-egress that are designed to restrict the opening angle of windows to 100mm maximum. This is ideal for households with children.

Squeaky hinges may indicate that the hinges must be replaced. It is typically due to metal friction against metal. If the noise is still present then a small amount of lubricant will help.

Plumb windows help avoid optional binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is line with the frame, ensuring that it opens and closes properly. If a window is not plumb, it could have issues opening and closing, or may become damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

When you purchase replacement windows made of upvc hinges, be aware that they can be bought in either imperial or sizes in metric. The sizes in metric are a little more precise, but this isn't really noticeable when they are put in. The first corner fixing holes on the track and arm are standard size but the others can vary in length depending on the hardware used originally. We advise that you measure the holes in your existing frame prior to purchasing any hinges made of upvc in order to ensure they are the right dimensions.

Crank

Over time, wear and tear can cause damage to the window handle the lock, crank mechanism or even the handle. This could hinder the ease of opening and closing your windows, as well as compromising their security. If your window is difficult to open or close or if you hear a clicking sound when you turn the handle it could be a sign you need to replace the mechanism. If you're unable to lock your window, or the multipoint lock is broken it might be worth looking into replacing this part of the hardware, too.

A new window crank can be replaced with minimal effort, but it's important to buy the correct size replacement. Make sure that the replacement is the same in height as the previous one and can be measured by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch that runs along the track running across the bottom of the window frame. You can also take a measurement of the length of the spindle on your current handle to determine what size you need to get a replacement.

The type of handle that is fitted to your window will determine the type of crank mechanism required for your casement and awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle on the back that is connected to the frame of the window and drives the window mechanism, while cockspur handles feature pegs which are fixed in place by three or four screws which are fixed to the frame and sash.

Once you've found the correct replacement, it's easy to install. Remove any trim mounting screws from the casement cover and carefully lift the cover to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the previous one and remove any trim screws that have rusted. Then, attach the replacement to the window frame, replacing any screws that are rusted or bent, then put the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
