It's not as spacious than high-end French door models, but it offers a lot of useful features and is an excellent alternative for those who have little space in their kitchens.

SmartThings

SmartThings might not be as powerful as Alexa or Google Assistant but you can still add a lot more smart devices to it. Samsung's TVs, phones refrigerators, and tablets all include SmartThings. It might be enough for some people, especially if they have multiple Samsung products.

The SmartThings App is well-rounded, and polished, with an "if x, then y" automation section that works well. There's also a cheaper SmartThings Hub Dongle that supports Z-Wave and Zigbee and Thread, with Thread support coming soon.


Once you've connected your smart fridge to your smartphone and hub, it is extremely simple to use. The SmartThings app lets you control your fridge from anywhere with notifications sent to your smartphone whenever it's open or closed. You can set up schedules to set the temperature, and even set reminders.

SmartThings is an early member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is trying to make major home appliances from a variety of manufacturers interoperable. In the future you could control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV through the same application.

Although it's not as widely accepted as Alexa or Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some big names on its roster that include Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's also compatible with Matter, which allows for accessories to be paired regardless of brand. For most users however, combining Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls is probably the best bet.

Family Hub

A fridge freezer isn't much more modern than this: it has a 21-inch touchscreen inside the door, and comes with a myriad of clever features. Bixby, Samsung's voice-activated assistant, lets users to access entertainment apps, create notes for your family (think of it as a digital version of the notepad stuck to the refrigerator) and check the weather forecast and a lot more.

The touchscreen lets you manage recipes and food. You can add ingredients from an app and check out the contents of your fridge with internal cameras. You can create an inventory of groceries on the move and track foods to track their expiration dates. You can even download an app for recipes that will provide instructions as you cook.

Samsung has spent an entire year working on the Family Hub fridges based on feedback from customers. You can now create distinct profiles for each family member so that they can personalize the information and apps that they can access. It's still not quite as good as having Alexa integration built into your fridge, but it's an improvement over last year's model.

Besides its ability to manage grocery and entertainment, Family Hub also acts as controller for Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be integrated into Matter-compatible devices, like lights and plugs and allow you to use the touchscreen to control them as well.

Samsung's fridge is a few years old, and while it still has a lot of functionality but its touchscreen features are not a feature that most people would consider a must-have. They're more fun, and somewhat frivolous features than any other feature.

It could change when more software updates are made available, but for now these models are best suited to those who want the most complete connected fridge possible. You can save money by purchasing a model without the Family Hub if you're not one of those people. This could be worth it if you have a lot of smart home devices that must be controlled from the same screen, or if you love the idea of refrigerators with a huge touchscreen.
