Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Mulliner, Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding unit, has designed a unique keycase to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the company. It is constructed of Dark Stained Burr Walnut with Piano Black Veneer and includes the flying "B" paperweight, keys, and an original 1930s booklet that features never-before-seen 1930s 8 Litre images.

Aesthetics

Bentley is a firm that takes its aesthetics seriously. It is evident in the precise position of its quilting, the selection of leather from the by-products of cattle, wood from sustainably managed forests and the unique patterns on its levers. A car like the Continental GT W12 beckons as you drive by to show its sculptural beauty and power by carefully curated lighting.

The Continental GT is the most sophisticated open-top Bentley ever built. Its rear tonneau, for instance, featured the largest piece of dark-stained, book-matched Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to the production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

It is this unique design, craftsmanship and attention to detail that has established Bentley as the world's most desirable automotive brand. The firm continues to push the boundaries by utilizing the most advanced technology and manufacturing techniques, such as the introduction of an instrument cluster with digital technology and an electric tilt-opening rear glass sunroof, an artisan-made docking station for Apple iPads and electrochromic "smart" glass that can be switched from transparent to opaque by pressing the button.

A century since its founding, Bentley - now under sole Volkswagen ownership after years of fighting with BMW was able to celebrate its centennial in the year 2019. The marque planned a variety of special events and launches to commemorate the occasion prior to when planning for a pandemic became a top priority.

Design

Bentley is a renowned brand for its extravagant and lavish automobiles and keys, but even the keys are designed to make a statement. The Bentayga key is made of sterling silver. It features an oversized 'B' logo that lets everyone know you're driving a Bentley. The key is also inscribed with the dates 1919 and 2019 to commemorate the company's centennial.

The Mulsanne was redesigned and developed by Bentley Mulliner in order to be the ultimate Grand Touring car. It features two opposing pairs of rear seats designed to be reminiscent of luxury private aviation, providing passengers with unparalleled comfort and security. The unique heating and ventilation system as well as the air conditioning system was designed to provide each passenger with the perfect temperature control.

In addition to a set of elegantly executed styling revisions The Mulsanne is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre W12 engine that produces 560bhp and 479lb-ft of torque. This amazing power is coupled by a new suspension system that gives Bentley's famously quiet ride.

Bentley has introduced a special specification for cars manufactured after 2019 to commemorate its centennial. This is known as the Centenary Specification. This includes contrast stitching and cross-stitching in Centenary Gold thread throughout the cabin. The Bentley Wings on the headrests and seats are stitched in Centenary Gold, adding to the feeling of celebration. The Centenary Specification also includes a custom Bentley keycase, adding to the Bentley experience.

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne Key comes with two buttons one of which opens the trunk, and the other that starts the vehicle. The key also has a button to turn on the parking brake. There is a knob that can fold and unfold the mirrors while parking in tight spaces. This feature makes it easier to get in and out of your vehicle.

The key is constructed from vegetable tanned leather. It takes more than two days to make each one. It is cut by hand, shaped, sewn, sealed and polished to provide an extremely high-end finish. It is sturdy compact and fits the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is reminiscent of the Volkswagen Phaeton's big car key, but feels heavier and more premium.

Secure-A-Key is also included to help prevent keyless entry theft. The device is inserted into the remote-control fob and then shuts it off when the key isn't used for a short period of time. It prevents thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices that can be used to unlock and start the vehicle.

Bentley's unique design reflects the company's values of exquisite craftsmanship and engineering expertise. It also includes modern technology. Over 4,000 people work at its Crewe headquarters, responsible for the development, design and production of Bentley cars. These workers utilize the skills passed over generations and then apply them to cutting-edge technology in the automotive industry. This is the hallmark of British manufacturing at its finest.

Personalisation

Bentley's bespoke division, Mulliner, allows customers to essentially design their own car. Customers sit at a set of images, referred to "mood stations" and pick a set of photos - from scenic views to sporting events that can inspire them. Every time a choice is made the pattern that emerges will reveal the model colors, style and color preferences for the bespoke Bentley.

The guests are given keys made by hand and containing the R.F.I.D. enabled key cards. Keys can be adorned with Bentley Muliner Personalised welcome lamps, which illuminate the path of the door's opening. They are adorned with the owner's name or logo as they approach the vehicle.


Bentley claims it takes about 500 man-hours in order to create and put together the typical Mulsanne. The reluctance to embrace new technology is the key to this laborious task. Instead of using a machine to place the perfectly-matched leather seats, workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. key bentley must park their cars manually, instead of using sensors built-in to direct them to perpendicular and paralell spots.

Bentley showcased its Mulliner personalization skills with an exclusive Mulsanne W.O. Edition, which pays homage to founder William Osler Bentley.
