In my testing the X2 Omni took just over one minute to clean its pad before getting to work. The X8 Hybrid looks like a traditional robotic vacuum cleaner from the top, with its circular shape, sweeping wheels and an elevated area for sensors. Flip it over, however, and you'll find an electric floor brush and a single side sweeper that carries dirt from the edges into the main path of the robot's mouth. It's smaller than the main brushes of the iRobot Roomba S9 which I found made it easier to reach under couches and chairs.

The mapping system is quite sophisticated that allows you to create no-mop zones as well as specific cleaning zones. However it is prone to hit things (including its charging dock) and isn't the best in climbing over rug. It was effective in picking up pet hair from the floor. In our tests it picked up 89.5 percent of kitty litter.

Although it can be controlled via the app it's also controllable via the app. X8 Hybrid also comes with a series of physical buttons on its base that allow you to select the cleaning mode and turn the robot off and on. Additionally, you can use these to set no-go zones and view real-time maps. It's a bit chatty, as well, and will inform you of what it plans to do next ("start cleaning") or even warn you that something's not right (it isn't able to charge, for instance).

The X2 Omni is an excellent option for homes with a large carpet, hard floors and carpet, but it requires some planning ahead to avoid getting stuck by toys, power cords or other obstacles that might be unexpected.

In our tests of hardwood floors and kibble the robot performed very well and was able to pick up everything from one grain of rice to several pieces of dog food in just one pass. It did have some issues with rugs, but generally the vacuum cleaner is great for large rooms that contain both types of flooring and a mix of pets.

It's not cheap however, if you are able to afford it, this is a great option for those who want to be able to leave their homes free to do other tasks or take care of chores. The A4s Pro also offers a convenient auto-cleaning mode that automatically boosts suction power to handle tough spills and dirt and it comes with a battery-powered ElectroWall which allows you to define boundaries where the robot isn't permitted to enter.

This budget-friendly robot from a popular new brand is the most affordable we've ever tested, and provides incredible value for money. Its navigation system is basic and uses an extremely basic random pathing algorithm and lacks room mapping capabilities, which makes it less efficient than other models on this list. However, it's still able to reach under furniture and in corners, and its mopping mode performed well in our testing it picked up pet hair and other debris easily.

5. Shark iQ

Shark's iQ isn't quite as sturdy as the Roomba S9, but it does better overall at cleaning up pet hair on all surfaces. It does a better job of cleaning carpets with low piles and floor surfaces that are bare. It also makes use of smart-pathing navigational software for greater mobility. It also allows you to send it to a specific room, and its sophisticated set of automation features include no-go zones as well as scheduling. It even lets you pause and resume a cleaning session which is ideal for households with pets.

Its self-cleaning brushroll helps prevent the tangles caused by pet hair and other debris and its self-emptying bagless dock station can store up to 30 days of dirt before needing to be empty. It has a set angled side brushes to reach into corners and a multi-stage filter system that collects dust, dander and allergens.
