5 Private ADHD Titration Tips From The Professionals
Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a nationwide shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due both to manufacturing issues and an increased global demand.

Our service is private ADHD titration instead of waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessments are free and include the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A comprehensive assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be carried out by a highly experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This includes a thorough medical history and an assessment using the common ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

Following adhd titration private list will be informed that medication may be beneficial in your particular situation. The discussion will take place at your follow-up appointment (which could be in person, by video link, or over the phone). Your doctor will go over the various options for medications available. If you decide to start taking medication, we can help you the opportunity to increase your dosage to optimize the benefits/side-effects balance for you.

This process can take several weeks and involves gradually adjusting your child's medication until the proper balance is reached. It is not unusual to need to titrate several times before finding the best one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is important that parents participate in the titration process and be aware of their child's behavior so they can inform the doctor whether the medication is helping or causing adverse reactions.

If you do not decide to return to NHS care, your medication will be provided with a prescription from a private pharmacy that you'll need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You'll need to keep up with your appointments every six months to monitor your medication. This includes the measurement of pulse and blood pressure. Annual exams are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is completed you will be able to schedule appointment with the psychiatrist as necessary. The appointment usually takes place through a video call using zoom, although in certain cases it is possible to schedule an audio only consultation (again at an extra cost).

At this point, we will discuss any treatment options we have and agree upon a bespoke individualised ADHD medication titration strategy. This will include a review of your medication dosage as well as a discussion of any possible side effects you might be experiencing. The cost for these titration sessions is PS150 for face to face sessions and PS60 for online or phone video consultations. The cost of medication is additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The doctor will also ask you about your family background and the impact your ADHD symptoms have on your life, including any relationship issues you might be having or other mental health issues you may be suffering from. ADHD can be a hereditary condition, which is why it's crucial to look into your family's history to determine if you are at chance of developing this condition.

It is essential to be honest and truthful with your doctor during this assessment, as the information they get will be used to determine if your ADHD meets the diagnostic criteria. This is an essential part of the process, as failing to do so could result in an inaccurate diagnosis, and thus an incorrect prescribing of medication.

If you have decided that you'd like to receive treatment for your ADHD We will arrange a follow up appointment with one of our psychiatrists who specialise in this area. If you want to start treatment immediately it is possible to start treatment at the time of diagnosis. Or you can wait two weeks to consider the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

If you're not sure which one you prefer We suggest you talk to your GP prior to booking your private examination as some providers have different rules regarding whether they require the submission of a GP referral letter or not. Check if your GP accepts the Shared Care Agreement, which means that you will be referred to them after you leave the clinic for prescription medication.

Medication

For many people who seek a private diagnosis of ADHD medication is an important aspect of their journey. It can be difficult to get a prescription from a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long, and GPs may be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.

One method to circumvent this is to request your GP to refer you to Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). You can choose a service that provides an assessment that is private and the titration. This will cut down your waiting time by a significant amount and is more convenient if you're working and have a hectic schedule.

Once you have been recommended by this method the doctor you choose will evaluate you and determine whether or not you're required to be titrated on medication. You'll need to fill out forms that differ by provider but the most frequent ones are self-reporting questions and medical histories dating back to childhood and adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor to determine if there are any factors that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medication, even if they have been prescribed.

If you are on a titration medication, it is likely to consist of stimulants and non-stimulant medications. These will be carefully trialled and monitored to find the most effective combination for you, taking into account any existing conditions you have. The titration can be a lengthy process and may require multiple appointments before you are stable.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend on the type and quantity of medication that you are taking. They could be scheduled monthly or quarterly. This will involve your clinician checking to see if you are stable on the medication, recording any side effects you have had and making any necessary adjustments to ensure you are on a dose that is safe. You'll also be required to attend a regular health check that may include blood pressure and pulse readings, as well as weight and weight measurements and an annual check-up.

Some people may be satisfied with their medication, and do not require discussing their titration in more detail. If you're required to discuss your titration or treatment plan more thoroughly it is likely that you will be referred back to the private clinic who made your initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration consultation will be part of their consultation fees and they will be given their medication through a private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This can cost more than a prescription from the NHS because the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
