Description

In the photos there are pictures of the aluminum information board I had made that explains the 1951 M38 Military Jeep along with the original data plates I framed. They were so hard to read that I had exact copies made to put on the jeep. This M38 has the combination of the factory included underwater ventilating system and the installation of the Deep Water Fording Kit enabled the M38 to drive through water up to 74″ deep. The air intake and exhaust extension, for fording, does not come with this M38 Jeep.

Everything works and is 100% correct. The engine block is marked 641087-LW-12-A-N1-CR-N2, which indicates it was from May 1951. Serial number is 24060 as shown on the data plates and a clear Ohio title with serial number being MC24060. Originally installed to this jeep is a cold weather primer pump along with a slave cable jump starter connection (located on the right front fender). The canvas top is a reproduction made to the original specks. The seat cushions are not original, but I have the original ones. Mileage is now 24,258 and the person I purchased it from said the odometer has always worked. He thought that the mileage was correct and it was original. I am the 3rd owner. The previous owner had the transmission and transfer case rebuilt and added new tires and seats. He said the engine had been rebuilt by the first owner. The mechanicals that I have done are: new Cuno oil filter, fuel pump rebuilt, new spark plugs, new master brake cylinder, new steering rebuild kit installed, new gas tank, new brakes and wheel cylinders, new speedometer cable, vacuum windshield wiper motors rebuilt, new gas gauge, new gas gauge sending unit, new master on/off switch, and just replace one 12 volt battery (there are two 12 volt batteries). New oil pan gasket installed at 24,222 miles. Sandblasted every small part, primered everything before painting. I found no rust on anything (completely solid).

The Willys M38 jeep starts with no problems. There is no smoke from the exhaust when starting or running. Transmission shifts normally. When down shifting into 2nd gear the transmission remains in 2nd gear. The four wheel drive works as it should. All lights (blackout, dash, etc.) work. All gauges work. Oil pressure at idle is 60psi and driving it is 90psi. Tires are like new.

There is only one problem with this M38 Jeep. There is a minor amount of fluid leaking (maybe the transfer case).

There are 2 rifles along with the leather scabbards that come with the jeep. The rifles are correct to the 1951 M38 Jeep period (Korean War). The leather scabbards are original from WW2 (these are not reproductions). The M1 Garand was manufactured by H&R with a barrel date of 6/54 and a bore measurement of .05 (meaning new). The M1 Carbine was manufactured by Inland with a barrel date 6/43 and a bore measurement of 1.0, which is excellent. After WW2 all M1 carbines went to the Army arsenals where they were fitted with a bayonet lug, adjustable rear site, and turn down safety, this being one.

As to the question of the two rifles and scabbards included with the M38 Jeep. Federal law places somewhat looser restrictions on the sale or transfer of long guns like rifles and shotguns across state lines. Under federal law, individuals can lawfully obtain a long gun from a seller or transferor in another state, provided that: Both parties meet in person to conduct the sale or transfer. Of course this will occur when the buyer takes possession of the M38 Jeep being sold. The buyer should check with their state laws as to buying long guns (rifles) through a private sale, between two individuals. If it is required to transfer gun ownership through a FFL (Federal Firearm License) license holder, this can be done since the seller of the M38 Jeep holds a Federal 03FFL (Collector of Firearms -Curios & Relics) license.
