The 1951 Willy’s Jeep M38 was purchased by the current owner from a friend’s estate after sitting completely unused since 2004. The friend’s father purchased the vehicle in the early 80’s as a utility vehicle for their farm on the Potomac River. When the 24 volt system failed, his dad abandoned that system and added a 12v starter and headlights. He also replaced the speedometer and cable, with a used set, but apparently bought a CJ-3A set and the cable was not compatible. Virginia Title records show 52,550 actual miles as of 10/2003. It is believed that the current speedometer never functioned, and then the previous owner passed away in 2004. The vehicle sat untouched since that time. The current owner installed the correct M38 speedometer cable and the actual mileage is believed to be approximately 53,000.
Prior to 2004, the previous owner added new brakes, new tire, added new canvas and repainted the vehicle. The driver side, front rim, is different from the other 4, but all are the same size. All rust was repaired at that time. There is evidence of floor panel repair in the footwells. The tub is solid with no soft metal areas. The only rust appears to be surface flaking on the undercarriage areas that were painted. There is one small area of rust on the windshield folding frame arm, driver’s side. The paint job, while amateurish and a non-original color, looks attractive and gets many compliments.
The vehicle runs good and there is an extensive list of repairs and improvements, including complete brakes, clutch and electrical systems and electronic ignition.Cylinder walls were all smooth on recent inspection and compression tested good on all 4 cylinders in August. The current owner is not familiar with the vacuum system routing; hence the windshield wipers only work manually, but there is a new OEM fuel pump installed and vacuum pressure is good.
The vehicle is offered with a clean Florida Title.
