I bought this last summer with the intention of keeping it but time and money tell me it needs to be a project for somebody else. It is a 1949, been in dry and windy northern Montana all its life, parked since about 1980. Appears to be almost totally unmolested from the way it came from the factory with a couple exceptions. One is that it has the later F head engine and the other is that the wheels were changed to 15 inch.
Somebody shot the glass and there is a bullet hole below the windshield on the drivers side. (I would leave that bullet hole) But the floors look like they are sound, there are very few dents and body damage, the grill is pretty good, all the things that are so hard to find on the early ones are intact on this one — the steps, tailgate, spare tire carrier etc.
It has a somewhat later 4 cylinder F head and the original transmission, drive train, etc., as far as I can tell.
I got a chance to put some roller tires on it, now the wheels all match except the spare which is a 16 inch. All the others are 15 inch. They are what were on it when I bought it.
I gave it a quick wash job and checked the floors, there is one small hole where the driver’s heel would set on the floorboards. Other than that they appear mostly solid. There is some rust but less than just about any pickup I have ever seen. The cab appears very solid, the doors open and close, the latches work, the dash is all original and shows 66141 but who knows how accurate that is.
I have a clean Montana title in my name for it in hand. It has current Montana license plates on it.
The title matches the serial number on the firewall tag, the title I turned in when I transferred the title to my name was from the 1950’s so somebody owned it for a long time. It was one of those old yellow Montana titles.
I would get it running and drive it the way it is after I got working brakes and glass in it but you buy it and you can do what you want with it. I definitely would leave the bullet hole in the passenger side wing window. It is just cool. You could write a lot of stories and tell them about that bullet hole.
I have not and probably will not start it, it turns over on the starter and that’s as far as we will do without an oil change and flush etc.
I have some photos on here and should have more on my site within a day or two. It is still snowing and cold in Montana.
I have added some photos and will have it on my montanabarncars web site soon. Click the Willys tab once you get to the main page.
If you want to buy it or want more photos, or info give me a call or email at email@example.com. I have a couple other pickups for sale, too.
